Christmas Nature Study Collection
Christmas Nature Study Collection
The Christmas Nature Study Collection is available for a limited time!
This collection includes twelve (12) Christmas-themed mini nature studies bundled together!
Many of these themes are appropriate for winter nature and can be used beyond just the holiday season.
Our family celebrates winter holidays to the fullest. Our homeschool lessons are full of fun holiday nature themes and I’m so pleased to be sharing them with your family!
Please note, this is a secular study that explores the origins of many of our Christmas traditions. We do mention some of the ancient cultural roots that predate Christianity. While it’s secular, we approach these themes from a cultural perspective, which we feel is appropriate in a social studies or anthropology discussion.
We’ve selected some special Christmas-themed nature topics for you to explore! From evergreen trees and snowflakes to winter birds and reindeer, we’ll examine nature during these colder months and discuss how these topics have become part of our holiday traditions. For example, we’ll learn the story behind the yule log, the meaning of holly and mistletoe, and the symbolism of the Christmas Star. Through this study, we’ll reflect on the beauty of winter nature and explore the deeper meanings behind some of our most beloved holiday traditions.
You'll receive a 190+ page pdf file that includes 12 mini nature studies, each with a simple guide, and reading list.
I pulled resources from my unit studies to create these 12 mini studies.
Evergreen Trees – We’ll explore the life cycle and anatomy of conifer/evergreen trees, which play a central role in many Christmas traditions.
Light – We’ll explore the science of light and discuss how it has become a symbol of hope, warmth, and joy during the holiday season.
Snow – A “white Christmas” is often associated with the magic of the season. We’ll discuss the science of snow, take a close-up look at different snowflake shapes, and explore the beloved poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”
Winter Birds – Winter is a fascinating time to observe birds! Some, like the northern cardinal, stand out against the stark winter landscape.
Winter Solstice – The winter solstice, the longest night and shortest day of the year, has been significant for cultures throughout history. Learn about what causes the seasons and why the solstice is central to so many winter traditions.
Christmas Plants – Let’s explore some of our favorite Christmas plants, their features, and the meaningful roles they play during the holidays!
Yule Log – We’ll explore the history, symbolism, and natural science of this festive tradition through an examination of a tree trunk and the ecology of a rotting log.
Partridge in a Pear Tree – Dive deeper into these two symbols of Christmas and take some time to appreciate their ecological and cultural significance!
Reindeer – Best known for pulling Santa's sleigh, there’s so much to learn about the noble reindeer!
Chestnuts – Learn about the ecology of chestnuts and the holiday traditions associated with this festive treat, which you may (or may not) have roasted on an open fire.
Winter Hike – Perhaps the best way to observe and appreciate nature during the winter season – a simple nature hike!
Stars – An important symbol for the season, let’s take a moment to reflect on how stars have inspired stories and helped travelers navigate throughout history.
The entire bundle is valued at $50 but is available for a limited time for $15.00. That's a 70% discount!
